Statement of Need
With the rise of opioid overdoses in the US, health care providers (HCPs) often feel caught between prescribing guidelines and patient needs. Knowledge of acute and chronic pain pathways and underlying mechanisms to clinical assessment are important for appropriate pain management; biopsychosocial assessments and utilization of tools such as PEG (Pain, Enjoyment of Life, General Activity) can go far in determining the underlying cause of a patient's pain. While verbal and visual scales reveal a patient's pain score, measuring for things such as anxiety, depression, and side effects of any current medications can help determine function and quality of life. Without this knowledge, it will be more difficult to treat a patient's pain.
The key to pain management is helping patients function better so that they can return to doing the things they enjoy. In this CME Outfitters Snack, expert faculty discuss pain assessment tools and risk stratification so that clinicians can reach the goal of both augmenting top-down inhibition of pain and reducing catastrophic reaction in patients with chronic pain.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this CE activity, participants should be able to:
- Apply knowledge of acute and chronic pain pathways and underlying mechanisms to clinical assessment and appropriate management of pain.
- Educate patients about their pain to optimize safe and effective, multimodal treatment plans.
The following learning objectives pertain only to those requesting CNE or CPE credit:
- Explain acute and chronic pain pathways and underlying mechanisms and how they relate to clinical assessment and appropriate management of pain.

Supported by an educational grant from Johnson & Johnson.
Target Audience
Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and pharmacists.
