Statement of Need

Although sleep is an essential component of health and wellness, many people experience disruptions in their sleep-wake cycle that are severe enough to impair physiological and psychosocial functioning. Sleep disorders such as narcolepsy and hypersomnia represent a significant health problem with short- and long-term consequences, including having a negative impact on work performance and attendance, create a significant economic burden, and cause increased injuries and accidents, health care utilization, and more frequent and longer hospitalizations.

Recognizing the neurotransmitters involved in the sleep-wake cycle and how the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) controls or regulates sleep is important, as is the identification and implementation of safe, effective therapies.

This interactive, faculty-guided 3-D animation will visually illustrate how the mechanisms of action (MOAs) of current and emerging therapies targets these neurotransmitters and shows how these therapies may impact the complex brain systems involved in the sleep-wake cycle.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this CE activity, participants should be able to:

• Identify key neurotransmitters involved in the sleep-wake cycle.
• Recognize how the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) controls or regulates sleep.
• Illustrate how the MOA of current and emerging agents may impact the sleep-wake cycle.
